What Can Northwestern Mutual’s Internship Program Do For You?

Laura Myers – Financial Representative

Laura Myers was an intern with the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network in 2008 as well as 2009 until she ultimately decided on Northwestern Mutual as her career choice.  As an intern, Laura Myers earned the Power of Ten award, an honor that only 220 of 2,000 interns in the country earn every year.  Laura decided to come on as a full-time team member with the company because of the strength and consistency that Northwestern Mutual represents within the industry.

“I chose the Northwestern Mutual Internship program because of its nationally acclaimed top 10 internship.  My mother is a successful business owner and a role model of success.  After I signed my college contract I found that I really could help people achieve their financial security.  I loved meeting with them, asking them questions, and producing an analysis/recommendations.  I earned my fulltime contract offer when I achieved Power of 10, what fewer than 20% of all interns achieve.  I chose to continue my business as a career upon graduating.  I love the win-win relationship this career offers.”

Jared Oberland – Financial Representative

Jared Oberland became a full-time Financial Representative after a successful summer as a College Intern. Prior to his internship, this Whitefish Bay native went on to the University of Iowa to pursue a degree in Biology. He also was a five year member of the Iowa Hawkeye football team, culminating his career with a 31-10 victory over South Carolina in the 2009 Outback Bowl. During his last two years at Iowa, he added a B.B.A. in Finance from the Henry B. Tippie College of Business to go with his B.S. in Biology.

Jared is not the first person in his family to join the Northwestern Mutual family. His father, Greg Oberland, is celebrating his 27th consecutive year working at the home office and currently holds the role of Executive Vice President of Insurance and Investment Products.

“As the son of a Northwestern Mutual executive, I was indoctrinated at a very young age.  I am a competitive person by nature and love working hard towards goals.  While attending Iowa and playing football, Scott Schwertfeger kept in touch with me because he knew I wanted a different career from the corporate pigeonholing.  Upon graduation, I contracted as an intern where I could “test Drive” the career.  Scott held me accountable to my goal and I achieved Power of 10 and was given a career contract.  I chose to make this my career because of the unlimited success I could achieve while helping people in my community.  I like the hard work, the play book for success and the results of my efforts!”
